CHAPTER FOURTEEN
It was still early when the two detectives arrived at The Neon Lounge. Her footsteps echoed on the deserted sidewalk when she got out of the car and walked through the un-guarded doors of the club.
The previous night's vibrant atmosphere had given way to the stillness of early morning. As they entered the lounge, the neon lights still glowed faintly, casting an eerie glow over the place. The lingering scent of alcohol hung in the air.
Maeve and Jordan stepped inside, expecting a few remaining partiers, flashing lights, and a huge array of flashing lights, music loud enough to deafen them.
Instead, they found the place almost empty.
The scene inside the Neon Lounge was a stark contrast to its nighttime allure. The dance floor, once teeming with people, was now a quiet expanse of empty space. A lone figure mopped the sticky floor with a wearied expression, while another man diligently wiped down the bar, lost in his own thoughts.
The partiers from the night before had long since cleared out, and now the early morning was the only time the place had to clean up the littered beer bottles, cigarette lighters, and plastic bags containing small amounts of suspicious white powder.
If the few remaining people noticed the two FBI agents enter, they didnât seem to care.
Maeve approached the bartender, her tone cordial.
âMorning. We're investigating the recent deaths of two women who were at the Neon Lounge. We'd like to ask you a few questions."
The bartender looked up from his task, with sleep in her eyes. He long, greying hair and a weatherworn face that reminded her of her dad, but unlike her dad, he had an innocent, kind expression on his face, dark green eyes, rimmed with crowâs feet.
âDeaths?â he asked. âIâm not sure Iâm following you. I noticed a few wild parties over the past few nights, but nothing out of the ordinary.â
Jordan chimed in, "Did you notice anyone or anything unusual, especially toward the end of the night?"
The bartender shook his head, his movements weary. "Nah, it was just a normal night for us. Things get pretty crazy around here sometimes. Iâm glad my kids donât come here."
âMind if we take a look around?â Maeve asked.
âBe my guest.â He shrugged and returned to cleaning the bar.
As they walked around the lounge, she kicked her way through more trash, broken glasses, and discarded clothes. She saw lone false eyelashes abandoned on the floor, and every surface was sticky. She frowned and made her way up to the stage, where there was a pole in the center and a huge sound system on the other side, complete with speakers and flashing lights.
Maeve didnât know what she was looking for.
She shuffled through the wreckage of the night before, imagining the place just hours earlier, full of life and energy.
Her sense of frustration grew. She could sift through trash all day and not find anything of significance.
She could picture the flashing lights, and the women covered in makeup, body glitter, with perfectly styled hair, and drinks in their hands.
